Twenty-One

For several minutes after they left the restaurant, Gray wondered what had gotten into Saige. They were having a great time. Did she see something? Or did her call to the ICU about Aiden not go well? Whatever it was, something upset her. He made a mental note to ring the ICU after dropping her off.

Worried about her behavior, he drove in silence to Mrs. Salucci’s Boarding House. As he parked along the curb, streetlights highlighted the cleared sidewalks. Someone had shoveled the path to the quaint old house. “Looks like Mrs. Salucci has been busy.”

“She’s an amazing lady.”

“Can I open your car door for you?” Gray held his breath, hoping against all odds that Saige would say yes. He wasn’t ready to leave her yet.

“I don’t think it’s necessary, but sure—if you’d like.”

Gray exited the car and opened her door. “I’m glad you agreed. There’s something I’d like to talk to you about.”

“There’s something I need to talk to you about too.” Saige stepped from the BMW to the curb.

“Can I go first?”

She nodded.

“If you don’t mind, I’m going to get to the point. I’ve never had a crush on a girl. Lilith came into my life by accident, but she and I became constant friends as we aged. When I asked you about Aiden at the clinic yesterday, you said he wasn’t your boyfriend—he was only a friend. I can’t help but wonder if you’re marrying him based on fear for his life and not because of true love.”

“People marry for many reasons—some do it out of necessity. Why should I be any different? Aiden’s a great guy. He’s a character, but I can adapt to that. I think he’ll mellow out with age. We’re compatible on almost every other level.” Saige leaned back on the BMW’s closed passenger door.

“Saige, be honest with yourself. Do you dream about him? Do you wake up eager to see him first thing in the morning? Could you be around him day and night forever?”

“Wha-a-at?” Saige chuckled. “I do need a rest from him sometimes.” She peered at her feet as though peering into Gray’s eyes might influence her words.

Gray stroked her cheek with his thumb, guiding her face toward his. “Then, Saige, he’s not the man for you.”

“I’m not sure I know what true love is anymore.”

A war raged in Gray’s soul. He struggled with his inner emotions— tell her how you feel—that you’ve finally found out what love is. Let her know you think about her from the moment you wake up until you fall asleep, and even then, your dreams are dominated by her face. Tell her she’s the one for you, and you don’t want to lose her. He shoved his hands into his coat pockets, balling his fists to refrain from shouting his feelings. Saige would never forgive him if he tried to steal her away from Aiden, especially while her friend was in critical condition.

Gray gazed dreamily into Saige’s eyes. She didn’t move. While she pressed against the door, he placed his hand against the car, beside her shoulder, to prop himself.
